The Old Military Barracks, Titchfield

Fort George was constructed by the British around 1730 to protect the town of Port Antonio, at a time when Spanish attacks on the north coast were feared. Later on, it was used as a base for soldiers who guarded the town against Maroon raids from the Blue Mountains.

Designed by royal engineer, Colonel Christian Lilly, Fort George has 3-metre-thick walls with emplacements for 22 guns. The cannons date to the reign of King George III and bear the name: Carron Ironworks, which was located near Edinburgh, Scotland.

The barracks building was constructed to house the troops based at the fort, and the cannonballs and other munitions were stored in the armoury.

Fort George functioned up to World War I and is now part of the Titchfield High School.
