Old Public Tank, Lititz

The Old Lititz Tank in St. Elizabeth was built around 1841 by the Moravian Church. It was created to address the water shortages that were caused by the low rainfall in the areas where they ministered. The tank is made of lime concrete, measuring 38 meters in length, 3.4 meters in depth, and holds approximately 132,000 gallons.

Though it later fell into disuse, the tank was revived by the Global Environment Facility along with support from various local agencies. This included repairs, installation of a solar pump and a drip system. It benefited hundreds of farmers until it fell into disrepair once again due to low maintenance. A new tank was erected in 1995 by the Moravians as a part of their ongoing commitment to the community.

Despite its current state, the tank still holds significant historical value as one of the first public water infrastructures in Jamaica. With proper care, it could once again be repaired and put to use.
