Folly Manager's Cottage

The Folly Manager’s Cottage, built in 1885, is a historic building on the Folly Estate located in Port Antonio. The cottage originally served as the main property house of the estate. Over the years, it has been associated with prominent figures such as Baptist minister James Service, Alfred Mitchell and his wife Annie Tiffany Mitchell, and Ronald and Louise Williams.

The cottage had transitioned into an overseer’s residence after the Mitchells developed the grand Folly Mansion nearby. Unfortunately, with the estate’s decline due to economic downturns arising from the crisis in the banana industry and World War 1, the family was unable to maintain the property, and with no successful attempts at finding a suitable buyer, the property was left in the hands of the Jamaican government. The Folly Mansion was left to decay, while the Manager’s Cottage became the residence of the Williams family.

The cottage is a one-storey bungalow with a low-pitched roof combining hip and gable ends. It also features a wraparound veranda supported by concrete columns. Its interior features a striking entry arch, along with bedrooms, a kitchen, and a rear servants’ quarters.

The Cottage remains in good condition, having undergone renovations while retaining many of its original elements.
