DeMontevin Lodge, Port Antonio

Built in 1881, DeMontevin Lodge (also known as DeMontevins Lodge) stands on Titchfield Hill in Port Antonio. It is an eclectic mix of the Victorian architectural style, with gingerbread details. As was the practice of the day, the date of construction is inscribed in the fretwork located above windows and doors throughout the structure. The building’s decorative ironwork was designed and cast in Scotland. Inside, lavishly carved mouldings surround the doorways, and tray ceilings draw the eye upward.

The house was built by the Hon. David Gideon, who became Custos of Portland in 1923. Many distinguished individuals have visited DeMontevin Lodge such as Queen Elizabeth I who stayed at DeMontevin in 1923 and in 1953 and 1966, Queen Elizabeth II also visited. Since 1953, the room where both Queens stayed has been named the Queen’s Room. Some of Jamaica’s distinguished statesmen including national heroes Sir Alexander Bustamante and Norman Manley, as well as other celebrities have also spent time at the house.
