Black River Spa

History

The Black River Spa, formerly the Black River Mineral Springs, predates 1891 because the Hon. J. C. Phillippo, M.D., mentioned it in his booklet "The Mineral Springs of Jamaica" of 1891.

These springs, which were known to residents of Black River and environs and used for medicinal purposes, were formerly opened to the public in April 1937.

To facilitate the public opening, some development took place at the Spa. These included the erection of two bath houses fitted with enamel baths to which water was conveyed by a semi-rotary pump.

The Spa, which was known for its medicinal properties, became a very popular attraction for visitors. The water of the Spa was tested and found to be very rich in minerals. Unfortunately, the Spa has been neglected over the years.

Inherent Features

The water of the Spa is enclosed by construction of a rectangular concrete wall about four feet high.
