Statue of the Rt. Excellent Norman Manley, St. William Grant Park

The monument to the Right Excellent Norman Washington Manley, which was declared on the 7th of January 2000, emphasises six salient aspects of his life and work. It is expressed by six vertical members tied together by a ring at a higher level and emphasized by complementary vertical shafts rising to a height above the ground. It was designed by H.D. Repole and dedicated in September 1972.

The original design required six plaques which depict notable aspects of the hero’s life. Due to financial difficulties, two sculptures by Christopher Gonzales were erected instead in 1974. The theme of the two sculptures centres on birth and the unity of the nation. One is a paternal figure, messenger of a new era; the other is a maternal figure, the earth mother.
