About this site
Antonio Maceo was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1845, and at age 23 he enlisted in the Cuban Army and fought in the first Cuban War of Independence. The Cuban Army failed in its bid to overthrow Spanish rule in their country; consequently, Maceo sought refuge in Jamaica. He later returned to Cuba to continue the fight but was killed in December 1896.
The people (Government of Cuba), in gratitude for the hospitality afforded him when he sought refuge here, gave Antonio Maceo's bust, located at the southwestern side of the National Heroes Park, to Jamaica.
