Statue of Sir Charles Metcalfe, St. William Grant Park

Sir Charles Metcalf was the Governor of Jamaica between the years 1834 and 1842. He was lauded for his excellent handling of the difficulties created by emancipation, and when he left office in 1841, the Assembly voted that three hundred pounds (£300) be used to erect a statue in his honor.

The statue was first erected in the old capital of Spanish Town until it was moved to King Street in 1861. In 1897, it was moved to its present site at the bottom of King Street on a pedestal which had been erected for the Rodney Memorial. On January 16, 1969, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) approved the removal of the statue to Victoria Park (now St. William Grant Park) by way of the Kingston Waterfront Re-Development Company.
