St. William Grant Park

St. William Grant Park, formerly Victoria Park and historically known as the Parade or Old Parade Square, is a major historic and cultural landmark in Kingston. Originally used as a military parade ground and later as a public park from the 1870s, the site has strong associations with Jamaica’s colonial, civic, and political history. It contains several monuments to national and historical figures, including Queen Victoria, Sir Alexander Bustamante, Norman Washington Manley, Sir Charles Metcalfe, Father Joseph Dupont, and Edward Jordon.

The park is especially significant for its connection to St. William Grant, a labour leader and Garveyite activist who used the area as a platform during the labour unrest of the 1930s and helped advance calls for better wages, living conditions, and land reform. Later improvements, including major works in 1987 and a facelift in 2010, enhanced the park’s recreational and civic facilities. Today, it remains an important regional, national, and local landmark symbolizing the struggles and achievements of Jamaica’s working class, though ongoing maintenance and public-use challenges continue to affect its sustainability.
