St. Peter's Church, Alley

St. Peter’s Church (Alley) is regarded as the third-oldest Anglican church in Jamaica, having been established around 1675 as the parish church of the old parish of Vere.

The present building was constructed on the foundations of the original structure between 1715 and 1735.

It is built primarily of brick, with timber elements and stone quoins. -St. Peter’s Church was also one of the few buildings in Jamaica to retain its original slate roofing until relatively recently. Due to weathering and advanced deterioration, the original slate roof has been replaced with more modern roofing materials.

The church contains several significant historic features, including stained-glass windows that are among the oldest and finest in Jamaica. Other notable artefacts include the church organ, built in 1847 and regarded as one of the oldest in the Caribbean.

The church bell, cast in 1857, weighs approximately three-quarters of a ton. It was manufactured by Messrs Mears of Whitechapel, London, the same company associated with the manufacture of the bell for Big Ben in London.

Another notable feature is the oak lectern, carved in the form of an eagle, which stands at the front of the church in memory of the Reverend Henry Vaughn Towton, who served as rector in 1827.

Several memorials are located within the church, some bearing inscriptions dating as far back as the 17th century. Among them are memorials associated with prominent Jamaican families, including the Gales, Morants and Suttons.

St. Peter’s Church is regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of an old English church in Jamaica. The historic building continues to function as a place of regular worship.

The church is administered by the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and remains open to visitors interested in its history and architectural heritage. St. Peter’s Church was declared as a National Monument on 30 March 2000.
