Bust of Cudjoe, Chapelton

Statement of Significance
The Chapelton Clock Tower and War Memorial is the only structure of its kind in the town of Chapelton. This unique structure makes it a distinctive landmark in the general area. The edifice commemorates all the fallen men and women in Clarendon who died in World War 1 (1914 - 1918). The prominent bust of Captain Cudjoe famed Maroon leader who resisted and fought back the advances of the British in 1690 guards the entrance to the park. The site takes on additional significance because of the presence of these historic landmarks.

Historical Significance

The bust of Captain Cudjoe is located in the Chapelton Tower Park along with the Chapelton Clock Tower. He was known as one of the great Maroon leaders. He was one of the enslaved Africans who participated in the enslaved revolt on the Suttons Estate, near Chapelton, in 1690. Although the rebellion was quickly suppressed some of the enslaved Africans managed to escape to the hilly interior where they established themselves under his leadership. This bust was erected in his memory to celebrate his achievements as a freedom fighter.

The Bust of Cudjoe stands prominently at the entrance of the park which serves as a constant reminder of the Maroons who once roamed the territory.
