Old Mico Building, Hanover St.

The Mico Institution, now the Mico University College, holds significant historical importance as the first Normal School and Teachers' Training College built in Jamaica, and indeed the first such college in the Americas. Although the institution relocated to Marescaux Road in 1896, the original building on Hanover Street remains intact and continues to serve as teaching space for the Kingston Technical High School. The Mico is recognized as the oldest teacher-training facility on the island and the longest continuously operating teaching institution in the English-speaking Caribbean, notable also for being the first teachers' college to train native Jamaican teachers, gradually replacing instructors sent from England. Over its long and varied history, the institution has shifted between being a male-only and co-educational school, and has produced many prominent Jamaicans, including politicians and Governors General.

The original building, now part of Kingston Technical High School, remains in use today, though it has experienced some deterioration due to exposure to the elements over time. Despite this, the structure is considered to be in fair condition, preserving a tangible link to one of Jamaica's most significant educational legacies.
