About this site

Designed to tell the story of passive resistance, the monument to Samuel Sharpe was designed by the Compass Workshop Ltd and was dedicated in October 1999.

The passivity of the cross is egalitarian. The Greek cross represents equality and reflects on Sharpe’s Baptist beliefs. The corners that rise vertically in three dimensions to form a cube metaphorically suggest the non-closure of freedom. These corners are then bounded in unity by elements of tension-restraining cables.

The monument was declared by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust on March 29, 2001.
