Monument to Rt. Excellent Nanny of the Maroons, National Heroes Park

The monument to Nanny was declared on March 29, 2001. It was designed by Compass Workshop Ltd and was dedicated in October 1999.

The sound produced by the main vertical structures is central to the theme of the Monument and evokes the sound of the abeng through the kinetic action of the wind against the face of the figure. It is a metaphor for the Maroons’ tactics against the English soldiers and rises in a spiral formation to the base of the monument. The secondary vertical structure symbolizes Nanny surrounded by her Guerilla warriors.
