About this site

Marcus Garvey died in England in June of 1940. His body was brought back to Jamaica and re-interred in the National Heroes Park. A monument was erected at his burial spot to commemorate his memory.

The monument to the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey was designed by G.C Hodges, former government town planner, in 1964. With T.A.L Concannon as supervisor, the work was done by staff of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (formerly National Trust Commission). A bronze bust of Garvey, which had been erected separately by the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation in 1954, was removed from its previous spot and incorporated into the design. The monument was declared on the 7th of January 2000.
