Browne Building, Lucea

Dating back to 1862, the Browne Building stands as one of the oldest structures in the town of Lucea. It was originally constructed as a fireproof warehouse and played a significant role in Lucea’s commercial space. The building was owned by Hon. William Browne, a Custos of Hanover and a prominent merchant whose initials “W.B” are still visible on the exterior of the building. Goods stored here were linked to Browne’s Wharf which was also located behind the property.

For over seventy years, the property remained in the Browne family, who operated A.H Browne & Bros. with branches both in Lucea and Montego Bay. The building had later passed through several hands including well-known businessman William Delisser and more recently, First (Mobay) Investment and Development Ltd. in 2021.

The Browne Building is composed of stone and brick construction, detailed cornices and brick columns and pinnacles. Within its interior, there are brick arches, double-barrel vaulted brick ceiling supported by metal beams which were once apart from a pulley system used for moving goods.

Today, the building remains as a well-preserved landmark along Lucea’s main street and is admired for its unique architecture and continues to hold cultural and historical significance for residents and visitors alike.
