Barbican Estate

Barbican Estate dates back to the early Eighteenth Century. It was originally a sugar estate which shipped rum and molasses. The Estate Accounts in the Jamaica Archives state that in 1759, Philip Dehany sent in the records and noted that the estate had 235 slaves and 35 heads of cattle. Early owners were George and Katherine Kayerson, then the Meyersons, a brother-in-law of the Santflebens of Lucea, who sold to Mr. Toefter, later known as Mr. Topper. Topper sold it to Mr. Willie DeLisser, who sold it to Trevor Morris, who still owns the Estate.

The great house is constructed of one to three feet of thick-cut stones. The approximate date of construction is circa 1730.

Up to 1902, Topper used the old method of grinding sugarcane by use of the windmill, the ruins of which are still evident on the Estate. Three cannons exist on the Estate.
