Old Alberga Bridge

The Old Alberga Bridge is a historic stone structure that was built in the late 18th century to provide a safe route across the Hope and Mammee Rivers along Gordon Town Road, which was an important route to the coffee plantations in the Blue Mountains. It was funded by the Jamaican House of Assembly along with public contributions, the bridge was completed around 1794 following the severe flooding that damaged the existing junction.

The bridge was later named for David Judah Alberga and Benjamin Alberga who were prominent 19th century landowners and civic leaders in the area. Despite it being decommissioned in 2000, the bridge is still regarded as one of Jamaica’s rare Georgian-era bridges. Since then, the bridge has been overgrown with vegetation and has not undergone any significant repair work or maintenance.
