Fort Clarence

Fort Small and Fort Clarence, located in Hellshire, were built to defend the western approaches at Kingston Harbour.  It was once inhabited by the Tainos and occupied by the various forces the Spanish, French, English. By 1799, an extended battery was added, and the site was renamed Fort Clarence in honour of Prince William, Duke of Clarence who later became William IV.

The fort contained 24-pounder cannons (five of which remain today), barracks, a vaulted magazine and a cookhouse. Additionally, the site included an underground shelter and a artillery store.

Currently, the features of both forts remain intact despite the vegetation that has taken over these sites.
