Eltham House

Eltham Great House stands on a site that was originally part of the Eltham and Bonham Spring Estates, a major sugar, rum, pimento and livestock-producing property from the 18th to early 20th centuries. It was initially owned by Joseph Price and was later owned by Benjamin Scott Moncrieffe, who was a wealthy and influential figure in St. Ann. He represented free people of colour during and after slavery. His descendants continued his legacy by serving in the Jamaican Assembly.

In 1916, the estate was acquired by Sir Thomas Roxburgh, a respected public servant and Custos of St. Ann. He transformed the estate into a cattle and coconut enterprise. In 1940, the property was transferred to the government and became the Eltham Training Centre, that currently offers agricultural and management training for over 70 years.

The Great House retains the 18th and 19th-century features, including a wraparound verandah, cut stone lower level, timber upper floor, gabled roof, original sash windows and defensive loopholes.
