Built in 1656, Fort Charles is the oldest and best-preserved fort in Jamaica. Originally named Fort Cromwell, it was renamed after Charles II upon the restoration of the monarchy. The fort played a crucial role in defending Port Royal and was commanded by Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1779. It survived the devastating 1692 earthquake that destroyed most of Port Royal.
